On the third Tuesday of every month, women gather at the home of Kathy Cheek to create mats for the homeless to sleep on.
The 3’ by 6’ mats, made from plastic grocery bags, are water-resistant, lightweight & insulating. Over 200 mats have been given to Agua Fria Food & Clothing Bank and Andre House, which serves people experiencing homelessness.
The first plarn mats were created in the early 2000's by various religious and community groups. The practice spread quickly, with groups creating these mats in every corner of the United States. Recycling plastic bags helps our environment and keeps the homeless dry and comfortable.
There are many videos online to learn how these mats are made. To join TWGC's plarn group please contact Kathy by email.
